Chinese drone giant DJI (大疆科技) launched its latest self-driving solution at the 2023 China EV 100 Forum in Beijing on April 2.
The solution offers a relatively low entry barrier to high-performance intelligent driving, which could be a potential game changer in autonomous driving industry, according to the company’s statement.
Specifically, it features computing power as low as 32TOPS, and 7V/9V pure vision sensing technology, without relying on high-precision maps or lidar sensors.
The solution enables Level 2+ autonomous driving, as it automatically switches between 32TOPs, ideal for intra-city memory driving, and 80TOPS, required under an intra-city navigation mode.
The system also comes with a range of other features, including active safety, driving assistance, parking assistance, memory parking, cross-layer memory parking, high-speed navigation, and more.
Notably, it can be reconfigured with up to 200 TOPS in computing power and augmented with additional sensors, such as millimeter-wave radar, ultrasound radar, lidar, and high-precision maps, to enhance the system’s safety.
The basic configuration of the system includes a pair of DJI’s unique forward-facing inertial navigation stereoscopic binocular cameras, a rear-facing monocular camera, and four surround-view fisheye cameras.
Capable of advanced real-time visual sensing and decision-making, the system is able to operate without relying on high-precision maps under a 7V mode — except for city navigation, which entails high-precision maps.
Upgraded to 80TOPS with two additional side-view monocular cameras, the system shifts to a 9V working voltage. It increases the ability to detect left- and right-hand traffic.
It helps sense the surroundings when the driver turns right or left, makes a U-turn, or drives in a roundabout.
DJI has said that the new solution is already available for adoption and that it is actively working with automakers to bring it to market.
The company has also indicated that it is preparing for higher-level autonomous driving systems in the future.
This new self-driving solution is expected to be a game changer by offering a low-cost, highly effective, and easily scalable option for automakers looking to enter the market, according to DJI.
